Reception: 2018 Spring MFA Shows: Darcie Beeman-Black and Li Chen

Saturday, April 28, 2018, 1:00 AM - 3:00 AM

On View: April 19 – 28

Reception: Friday, April 27 from 6 – 8pm

Perspective is Reality: Works by Darcie Beeman-Black will be on view in the ArtsMemphis Gallery in the Easterwood House at 156 N. Tucker.

Each piece in Beeman-Black’s show utilizes multiple viewpoints to portray different understandings of space, light, form, and color. The use of geometry, pattern, and repetition disguise the space with recognizable forms. Beeman-Black explains: “This body of work addresses both the observer and the wearer with headpieces, mouth pieces, pendants, and rings that are integrated into scientific environments that exhibit the experimentation of space, light, color, perspective, and perception.”

Works by Li Chen will be on view in the Tom Johnston Gallery in the Faiers House at 150 N. Tucker.

Chen’s documentary photography work about local Chinese Christians explores their presence in Memphis. Chen remarks, “Asian-Americans’ voices are barely being heard, even when discussing minority issues. I want to use this work to increase awareness of this group, to help Chinese-Americans’ voices reach the mainstream conversation, and to erase the racial boundary in people’s minds, especially in the current political climate.”
