Memphis Woman's Community Service Club Meeting
There is a new community service woman's club forming in the Metro Memphis area. It is called the GFWC Metro Memphis Woman's Club. The GFWC (General Federation of Women's Clubs) is an international non-profit community service organization that has been active for 127 years. Our signature project is domestic violence awareness and prevention. We also work in a variety of areas including leadership, advocates for children, arts, conservation, education, international outreach, public issues and more. Membership is open to women of all ages and interests.
Here is a link to the GFWC website: www.gfwc.org. Our federation has an absolutely incredible history of accomplishments including the formation of over 75% of public libraries, passage of the first safe food and drug act, purchase of 431 bombers during WWII, purchase of fully equipped ambulance for New York only 2 weeks after 9/11and many more.
The program will be about the Hutchinson LEADS and the Abigail Ware Williams Leadership Institute for girls sponsored by the Hutchinson School. GIRLS IN LEADERSHIP is for girls entering grades 8–10. From the catalog: "Hone your creativity as you build your brand, explore your growth mindset, and find your purpose in this camp designed for you".
Speaker Profile: Kathryn Jasper, Hutchison Leads Director at Hutchison School, has been in education for over ten years. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Kathryn headed back to Memphis, her hometown, beginning her teaching career at Central High School. Chance and fate led Kathryn to tour Hutchison School and learn about their co-curricular work, a model that was inspiring and exciting. Kathryn began at Hutchison in 2012, teaching social sciences and leading the upper school community service program. Within a year, Kathryn became the Hutchison Leads Director, heading the program that had inspired her move in the first place. Hutchison Leads is a nationally recognized leadership development program for all upper school girls, with a four year curriculum that embraces the growth mindset and guides girls to find their passion, learn from the Memphis community as a leadership lab, and develop key leadership attributes. When not working, Kathryn is a mom to Hutchison Little Hive student Ruthie (age 2), blogs for Memphis Moms Blog, enjoys going to the zoo, considers herself to be an amateur local foodie, and appreciates all things Memphis.
Leadership has always been a HUGE emphasis of the GFWC. This should be a very interesting program.
Door Prizes: We will also be giving 2 gift certificates for admission (for 2 people) to a movie about Emily Dickinson (starring Cynthia Nixon) at the Malco Theater!
